Hungarian Animation Film Scene – 2015
(Anna Ida Orosz, Budapest, 6 November 2015)

Generally it can be said that most autonomous animations are produced at various educational institutions, such as the animation department of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. Universities are beginning to play roles similar to those that were played by animation studios in the past. Professional animation studios, both largeand small, prepared themselves for commissions involving the animation production of foreign animated features (e.g. Cinemon Entertainment), advertisement films, ID-films, music videos (e.g. Umbrella), digital post-production work (e.g. PostEdison, Gyár, FocusFox), and trailers for computer games (Digic Pictures).

Since 2011, public television in Hungary again began to give out grants for short films, TV-series episodes and whole television series. (The grants that are coordinated by the Media Council of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority: the Gyula Macskássy for animated short films and TV-series pilot episodes and the Attila Dargay grant for whole series.) The Hungarian National Film Fund also provides grants for the creation of full-length animationsand graduation films. They launched the Incubator Program for first film makers in 2015.

Each year ca. 20 animated short films and pilot films (3–10 mins in lengths) have been made since the launch of the grants – mainly intended for television broadcasting. Among others such internationally awaited projects are in development as LOVE (a short film by Réka Bucsi), the series of the Adventures of Candide (directed by Zsuzsanna Kreif), the short film series of Kojot (by Áron Gauder).

The newly launched Incubation Programme of the Hungarian National Film Fund offers mentorship for scriptwriting and production development of feature length films. This year 2 animation projects have been selected for development: Bálint Gelley’s Átjáró Másvárosba (Passage to Othercity) will be an adaptation of a contemporary Hungarian children’s novel; Tibor Bánóczki’s and Sarolta Szabó’s Műanyag égbolt (Plastic Sky) will be a dystopia about the future of human kind where the only food grows on a plant which lives on human flesh.

Films developed independently outside the national grant systems are Oligarchy, a harsh political webseries (by Balázs Turai), Blue Pelikan, an animated documentary (by László Csáki, Umbrella Studio); Wildboar (by Bella Szederkényi, Kabinett Film; Les Trois Ours).

The most successful Hungarian animation films in the last year were Limbo-Limbo Travel (the graduation film by Zsuzsanna Kreif and Borbála Zétényi, MOME Anim and Lardoux Films), the winner of the Silver Dragon of the 55th Krakow Film Festival, which makes it eligible for the Oscars; Tale by Attila Bertóti (winner of Best graduation film at Monstra Festival, Lisbon). Two competitors at Sundance Film Festival were: Leftover by the Hungarian directors Tibor Bánóczki and Sarolta Szabó, produced at Paprika Films and Folimage, France; and teeth by Daniel Gray and Tom Brown, a short film produced in the US, UK and Hungary.
